How do you choose the right wire specifications for home renovation?

Home renovation invariably involves electrical wiring modifications. This is not merely a matter of functionality, but-more importantly-a matter of safety. So, how does one go about selecting the appropriate wire specifications for a home renovation project?

 

BV wire-featuring PVC insulation and a copper core-consists of a single solid copper strand; this is commonly referred to as "hard wire." BVR wire, on the other hand, features a multi-strand copper core and is known as "soft wire." Generally speaking, BV wire is utilized for general wiring throughout the home, while BVR wire is typically reserved for internal wiring within electrical cabinets and distribution boxes. Since BV wire is more affordable and simpler to manufacture, it is perfectly adequate for the wiring needs of a standard residential renovation.

 

Common wire specifications encountered in home renovation include 1.5 mm², 2.5 mm², 4 mm², 6 mm², and 10 mm² copper wires. In practice, however, most electrical renovation projects require only two specific wire sizes: 2.5 mm² and 4 mm².

 

Specifically, 2.5 mm² copper wire is used for wiring all switches, power outlets, and lighting fixtures throughout the home. The usage of 4 mm² copper wire is somewhat more limited; it is typically reserved for dedicated circuits serving the kitchen and high-power appliances-such as central air conditioning systems and electric water heaters.

 

Wires larger than 4 mm² are rarely needed in standard renovations. While 6 mm² or 10 mm² wires are typically used for the main service entrance line (the primary feed entering the home), if there is no need to replace the electricity meter, the service entrance line itself, or the main circuit breaker, then there is absolutely no reason to use such large-gauge wires-doing so would simply be a waste of money.

 

Conversely, wires smaller than 2.5 mm² are becoming increasingly uncommon in modern home renovations. Given the ever-growing variety of electrical appliances used in today's households, 1.5 mm² wire is rarely capable of safely meeting all the necessary power demands.
